I have an almost 14-month old! He’s such a little charmer (most of the time). I just love watching him grow. He has two molars now, bringing the tooth count to 10. He sleeps through the night (mostly). He loves his mommy and daddy (mostly, haha), but not as much as his grandparents. He also loves his cousin Hallie, but now she’s not so sure about him. Sometimes he runs after her screaming with his arms out (HUUUGGGS!!) and she either runs away or lays down and plays dead. It’s a lot of fun seeing them play together now. He runs, climbs on everything, jumps indiscriminately, and does a hundred other things that stop my heart. Lately he loves to close doors. He can open our outside doors too if they’re not locked, so that’s a new concern. He loves nothing more than playing outdoors, so we make sure to have outside playtime every day. We go on lots of walks, with and without the stroller. He loves to swing and slide at the park, and I can’t even get to the bottom of the slide fast enough to catch him before he’s sliding down gleefully. He says Mama, Dada (or “daadddYY”), woof woof (what the doggy says), brooo (what the elephant says), bloo (what the fishy says), rooooaaarrr (what he thinks lions, bears, and alligators say), hi, Lucy (“looozh” or lulu or lala), “there it is,” baby, and probably others I’m forgetting. It’s all very cute. He likes dancing to music and spinning around in circles until he’s dizzy. He was a good boy when we flew to Atlanta, drove all over the South, and flew back home – much better than I expected him to be. My baby looks like such a handsome little boy now. It’s amazing how much he’s grown. He may be a big boy now, but he still gives his mama hugs and kisses, and he likes his cuddles. I hope he stays that way forever!

Here are some later birthday pictures from 2 months ago.

The pre-birthday photo shoot:

These were all taken by my lovely sister-in-law Keshia, with help from my brother Jordan. Thanks for the great pictures, guys!

William's Invite

I made William’s cake. The characters on it are my drawings from his invitation, printed on edible frosting sheets. I only had 10 minutes to cute them out and put them on the cake, so they didn’t look great. The other cake was supposed to be cupcakes from a local bakery. That fell through at the last minute, so my lovely brother and sister-in-law stopped and bought Costco cakes on their way to Ridgecrest. Thanks so much, Adam and Shelby! You guys were lifesavers (plus, they majorly helped with party prep). The roses that came on the cake didn’t seem theme-appropriate, so I scraped them off and redecorated with meringue mushrooms and acorns made of Hershey kisses, mini Nutter Butters, and a mini chocolate chip. I think it turned out pretty cute for a last minute salvage operation.

This William banner (in chronological order from birth) was so dang cute that it’s still hanging up in our dining room.

Oh no, I only have two hours left before William turns ONE! I’d better hurry up with this post! This month involved lots of walking, laughing, playing, and just generally being cute. Oh, and climbing, jumping, falling, and getting hurt. Giving mommy’s heart a workout.

William’s Tenth Month

The first birthday is fast approaching, so I only have a few days to get the last two months of blog posts done. Let’s see, what did we do during William’s tenth month? Christmas and New Year’s were the most major thing. We also visited Great Grandma Anne, and went to the Kern Audubon River Preserve twice. Lots of fun. Oh yeah! He started walking for real this month. At 9 months old. And as soon as he started walking, he started climbing. He’s now constantly got bruises all over himself.

First steps by himself:

Second trip. We saw 3 does, 3 fawns, and 1 buck, plus an eagle:

For some reason, he loved playing on the beds in the hotel room.

William loves to play, and he NEVER STOPS MOVING.

IMG_4661

We’ve since replaced the cardboard box with a prettier toy receptacle.

IMG_4665

IMG_4666

I found my old dolly Jessie and cleaned her up. Her clothes were pretty tattered, so I dressed her in some of Lucy’s preemie clothes. I gave her to William, and cried as he kissed her over and over again. He still kisses her all the time.

IMG_4620

I guess he was stashing his water for later.

IMG_4610

He’s constantly going where he doesn’t belong. It actually took me a minute to find him there.

IMG_4588

He LOVES to play in the bath.

IMG_4566

David tried to put him in the walker, and he was having none of it. This is as close as he would get. Now it’s just a climbing toy.

141

Playing with his new toy from Autumn, Aaron, and Talen.

032

IMG_4554

And, as usual, playing with Daddy.

Balloon

Boy, he really loved this balloon.

Laughing

I have no idea what was so funny here.

Waving out the Window

In this one, he was kissing his puppy, dancing, then waving out the window because he knows when Daddy should be coming home.

He’s been pretty stubborn and naughty at times, and he’s way too good at saying no:

Say Mama

Trying to get him to say Mama. He only says it when he’s hurt or tired. Otherwise, it’s all Dada all the time.

No no no

No no no!

Being Naughty

In fact, almost every time he does something he knows he’s not supposed to do, he shakes his head “no” while doing it anyway.

IMG_4560

Being told “no” makes him sad. Poor baby.

IMG_4625

He gets good and irritated.

He’s a big fan of eating:

IMG_4535

IMG_4539

IMG_4640

IMG_4647

IMG_4550

Hiii

He doesn’t really have great manners yet, but he does say Hi!

Sleepy

But one time, he just fell asleep.

IMG_4413

IMG_4414

Yep, he’s out.

Turns out, he did a lot of cute sleeping this month:

IMG_4600

IMG_4546

Well, that one’s more ridiculous than cute. But still cute.

IMG_4455

IMG_4435

129

There’s nothing like having babies around to make Christmas feel even more special. William didn’t really care this year, but it was fun to celebrate with him for the first time anyway.

He got to visit Santa Claus twice, and even saw Mrs. Claus when they visited the Ronald McDonald House (and we got to see Autumn and Aaron and Talen!)

He loves the hammer from his pounding table. Here, he took it over to Daddy’s new step ladder to test it out.

And that was about it! We had a great Christmas, and we loved spending it with William. The only thing missing, of course, was Lucy. We hung her stocking on the mantle, just like we will every year. We wrote letters to her and put them inside, a tradition I hope we’ll continue every year. Maybe when William gets older, he’ll want to write her a letter too.

IMG_4304

Here’s the Christmas card we sent out, by the way. I was so pleased with how cute it was when I ordered it – our very first family photo Christmas card. As you can see, I overlooked one important thing. I forgot to change the default name, so all of our cards were sent out from the Copeland Family. Oh well, live and learn. I actually thought it was kind of hilarious.

William’s Ninth Month

I’m going to try to finish all of William’s monthly updates before he actually turns one (in less than a month!), then I won’t be doing them as frequently. He’s growing so fast, and he’s so much fun. I’ve got to be honest, though, we’ve had some rough times. I was almost smug, really, when at 3 months he transitioned easily to his crib and slept 11 hours straight. “What’s so hard about babies?” I thought. But that all ended when he got his first tooth at 4.5 months. He has all eight front teeth now, and is working on molars, and he didn’t sleep through the night again until very recently. In fact, it just got worse and worse! We weren’t doing anything wrong, and believe me when I say that no sleep system, or routine, or program, or whatever was cutting it. I was getting more and more tired as he woke up 6-7 times a night (and often didn’t go back to sleep for an hour, only to wake again 15 minutes or 45 minutes or an hour later). I was lucky if I got a 3 hour stretch of sleep. Finally, I couldn’t handle it any more and decided something had to change. I still nurse him on demand, and I have always nursed him to sleep. That’s a major no-no according to every sleep expert, but I think it’s nonsense. It feels like the most natural thing in the world to nurse my baby to sleep, and I still do. However, I decided I wouldn’t nurse him during the night anymore. Just, no more. Cold turkey. And you know what? It worked. Instantly. The first night. Hallelujah! On that first night, when he woke up, I picked him up and rocked him back to sleep, which he hated, and it took a while. I tried to lay him down in his crib, and he woke up as usual. I cuddled him back to sleep a couple more times, and overall, it took a little over an hour before he went back to sleep. Then he didn’t wake up until I was getting up. The next night, I cuddled him back to sleep once, but when he woke up in his crib I let him fuss and yell at me (he wasn’t really screaming, and he could see me the whole time), and I ignored him until he laid down and fell asleep. It took maybe 45 minutes. The next night he didn’t wake at all. Ever since then, he’s basically back to sleeping through the night. Every once in a while he’ll wake up, and I pick him up, give him a quick cuddle, then set him back down, and he goes right back to sleep. If I don’t go cuddle him when that happens, he wakes all the way up and stays awake. Anyway, I feel like a new woman. I realize that people have really strong opinions about all this, but I couldn’t be happier. He’s not in bed with us (which, by the way, I approve of completely if you do it safely, it’s just not for me, since I can’t sleep well at all when William is in bed with us), I’ve never had to let him “cry it out,” he’s still nursing, and he knows mommy will always be there. It turned out to be a perfect solution for us, and William is a noticeably happier boy now that he’s sleeping better. (Side note: I do think it’s important for younger babies to nurse on demand, including at night, and will do that again if we have another.)

So that has been the biggest issue for us over the past several months. William is a happy, stubborn, daredevil of a child, and we’re loving getting to know him. He cracks us up regularly. And now that I’m sleeping better, I’m not so cranky and short-tempered, and have been having more fun. So, on to the pictures.

This month was characterized by a lot of moving, and being chased by mama. He’d been crawling for a while, and cruising for almost as long, but this month he found out he could cruise along walls at a gallop (with his hand barely touching the wall), and he started climbing.

IMG_4212

IMG_4041

This month was the end of the baby jail. He just wouldn’t have it anymore.

Seriously, he was always moving, even when he wasn’t speed-crawling/cruising.

Although you wouldn’t necessarily know it from this picture.

IMG_4371

IMG_4248

He’s a slow waker-upper.

Some times he wakes up faster than others.

Most of the rest of the time he’s a real ham, and he loves to play (roughly, in true boy fashion), and eat:

Major events this month included Aunt Keshia’s birthday, visiting Aunt Shelby and Uncle Adam, Tabatha’s pre-Thanksgiving Dinner, and actual Thanksgiving:

IMG_4102

This was the best picture I got of all the kids on the swing at Tabatha’s. It was very cute, but lasted only seconds. I think right after this William pinched the poor child next to him, and it was all over.

He loved all the Thanksgiving food. He ate turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, and whatever else he could get his hands on.

He learned how to shake his head “no” that month, and he hasn’t stopped since. He knows darn well what it means, too, because he shakes his head like that every time he’s doing something he knows he’s not supposed to.

The boy loooooves his dada. He lights up when daddy gets home from work, and he would play with him all day long if he could:

William’s Eighth Month

Okay, it’s just ridiculous how late I am on these now, but William has turned into quite a handful. He walked at 9 months, and he was crawling at 6, and all I do is chase him all day saying “no no, William, please leave Mommy’s books alone. No no, that will hurt you. No, no, NO!” Anyway, it’s exhausting, and I barely have time to keep my house clean, let alone post on my blog. But I’m going to try to power through pictures from the last few months to document his growth and for the family and friends still following along.

Big this month was Halloween. I love Halloween, and I love thinking of Halloween costumes. So this Halloween, before he wants to be Iron Man or something, I dressed him as a gnome. I was a dryad, and David was a woodsman. I enjoyed making his costume.

The beard was not thought out well and didn’t last long.

Thanks to Jordan for taking this picture.

I carved one monster for William, and one for Lucy:

Uncle Justin gave him a toy jack-o-lantern.

He had fun at Uncle Justin’s birthday:

He was standing all the time by then, and cruising around stuff:

In baby jail.

IMG_3805

A frequent sight, as he pulled himself up onto the coffee table using his mouth.

He even stands in his high chair. It’s his favorite part of the meal, in fact.

He likes to eat, this kid:

IMG_3638

Especially mommy’s yummy curry turkey pot pie that she left on the table for ONE SECOND.

His favorite is still milk,

But steak, and beef in general, is a close second.

He likes going out on the town with mommy and daddy:

To the fair.

IMG_3814

To the butcher.

IMG_3808

To Home Depot.

IMG_3783

Or sleeping in the car on the way home.

He LOVES to play with Daddy:

Daddy loves to play with him too. But really, William just loves to play in general, and that includes a lot of upside down time.

IMG_3709

Taking a bath with cousin Hallie (one of the rare moments he was sitting. He will never sit still in the bath.)

Taking a break from all the playing.

IMG_3946

He’s very serious about making grandma push him on his train.

IMG_3952

Playing with the baby in the mirror.

Playing with Mommy.

His other grandma and grandpa came to visit, and he had lots of fun with them:

Oh, he also went to a baby shower! Wasn’t he handsome?

This boy has the best faces and poses, good and bad. I never get tired of seeing all of his expressions:
